Since the Proclamation of Indonesia’s Indepedence by Sukarno and Hatta on August 17th 1945, the Independence Day is celebrated annually by a solemn flag raising ceremony in the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Ministries/Agencies, Universities, Schools. From Minister or Head of Agency to the staff members, each would take part in this celebration.

Unlike the previous years, this year’s Commemoration is held quite differently in Indonesia due to COVID-19 pandemic. The Government ensures that flag raising ceremony would have to follow the necessary Health Protocol.

In the State Palace, the ceremony is led by President Joko Widodo and attended by very limited few officials, including Speaker and Vice Speakers of the House of Representatives.

From the Foreign Ministry’s Headquarter, Ibu Retno Marsudi, Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, led few First Echelon officials in attending the ceremony via online. In abroad, Indonesia’s Ambassadors and Consul Generals in respective countries and regions/cities also led the ceremony and attended by limited audience.

Few numbers of attendees, however, must not undermine our unity, as Indonesians, in commemorating this historical milestone of Indonesia’s Independence Day.

On this note, it is truly heartening to witness the solemn celebration of Indonesia’s Independence organized not only in the capital of Indonesia, but also by Indonesian Embassies and Consulates in abroad.

Indonesians, who have lived in abroad either for short or long period of time, proudly wear traditional costumes from the regions of Indonesia at the ceremonies. From their colourful outfits depicting “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, one could concur that these attendees are proud in being Indonesians and displaying their love for this country.

Catatan Singkat untuk Rekan Diplomat dan Sahabat Pecinta Batik dan Kain Nusantara:

Dirgahayu Indonesiaku,

Let’s start with something doable.

Start from proudly wearing our traditional costume, either Batik, Tenun, Tapis, Songket and various kain Nusantara.
