Fashion Diplomacy Prevails at Indonesia Fashion Week 2017

‘Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only.
Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.’ – Coco Chanel

Mini Seminar on Indonesia’s Fashion Diplomacy was held for the first time ever at the recently concluded Indonesia Fashion Week 2017. This premier event was hosted by IFW in collaboration with Consulate General of Indonesia to New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. The seminar featured Dr Yayan Mulyana, Indonesian Consul General in Sydney, as main speaker. JET is honoured to serve as Moderator in this prestigious gathering.

“To effectively penetrate Australian market, the actors of Indonesian fashion industry have to take into account nine strategic factors, namely taste and style element, fashion studio, fashion event, shopping centres, high fashion retailers, textile and fashion industry, organization, media and fashion gallery. Further, from the perspective of soft diplomacy, fashion reflects the identity of a nation. Thus, each Indonesian is able to promote fashion diplomacy, not only the diplomats. Let us promote Indonesian fashion, including Batik, anywhere and anytime”, as underlined by Dr Mulyana, at the Mini Seminar. Dr Mulyana’s presentation is titled “Indonesia-Australia Fashion: Commercialization, Beyond Commercialization and Diplomacy”.

During the discussion session, enthusiastic participants were eager in knowing more about the prospects on tapping the potentials of Australian market to Indonesian fashion. Consul General Mulyana then explains that local designers must not worry about fierce competition with international designers and brands, as Indonesian designers possess comparative advantage on good quality and unique nature of product, such as Batik and Tenun, as well as reasonable cost.

Prior to closing, Madam Poppy Dharsono, Chair of IFW, states her heartfelt appreciation to the participation of Consul General Yayan in the history-making event which emphasizes Fashion Diplomacy. The IFW Chair expresses her utmost hope that IFW and Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney could embark on a collaboration to promote local talents. Madam Okky Asokawati, Member of Indonesian Parliament, express that under the initiative of Indonesian Consulate General, fashion diplomacy could be conducted in a “fresh” and “out of the box” manner.

The full-house event was attended by approximately 150 stakeholders of the mode industry, including designers, entrepreneurs/owners of SMEs, academic, artist and fashion students. Ambassadors and senior diplomats from Australia, Afganistan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Denmark, Nigeria and Panama, as well as representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Trade also participated.

Indonesian top-notch designers, among others Didiet Maulana, Auguste Soesastro, Nita Seno Adji, Rudy Chandra, Handy Hartono, Merdi Sihombing, Komaruddin Kudiya and Coreta Kapoyos attended the event. Special coverage of the event is conducted by Metro TV and HighEnd publication.

IFW, which overarching theme titles “Celebrations of Culture”, is an annual event for the stakeholders of Indonesian fashion industry. Held on 1-5 February 2017, IFW 2017 presents 20 fashion shows and displays creations from hundreds of designers as well as fore-fronting ten tourism destinations from Sabang to Merauke.

Proud of Indonesian culture, wear Indonesian fashion! Jayalah diplomasi busana Indonesia.
