JET's BATIK PREFERENCE FOR EID MUBARAK & HALAL BILHALAL

Batik is an art form.
By its inherent characteristics, it is made for special people, to be worn on special occasions
- Iwan Tirta, the late Batik Maestro

Halal Bilhalal is the auspice event in Indonesia when friends, families and colleagues get together to celebrate the aftermath of Ramadhan. Generally, the event is held post the Eid Mubarak, or known as Idul Fitri in Indonesia.

During Halal Bilhalal, a range of traditional culinary representing Indonesian diverse regions is served from the famous Siomay (dumpling) Bandung to the famous Padangnese rendang (beef stewed in coconut milk for hours, sometimes overnight to make the beef tender and fragrant) which is known as one of the world's most delicious food.

Yet, food is not the only thing famous about Halal Bilhalal. Traditional Indonesian fashion is also widely displayed during this joyful event. Now, let me take you to the two Halal Bilhalal celebration. The first one held by Directorate General for Legal Treaties and International Treaties of Indonesia's Foreign Ministry, and the second one hosted by Dharma Wanita Persatuan (Organization of Civil Servants' Spouses) in Indonesia's Foreign Ministry.

I woul also like to share some documentations that I made during the beautiful Idul Fitri (Eid Mubarak) celebration in Sydney, Australia. The Consul General of Indonesia to New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland hosted a warm and elegant reception in his official residence in Rosebay, Sydney.

One would spot plenty of Batik, Tenun, Songket and other traditional textiles from Indonesia. What a colorful feast of fashion! Witnessing these beautiful textiles from Tanah Air worn charmingly in another country must make us, Indonesians, proud of our treasured culture.

Other communities may have different types of traditional textiles but do they only respect these as their national costumes and probably only wear them once every year during their national day, or do they share not only the pride but also the joy in wearing these attires as we, Indonesians, always had, have and -I sincerely hope- will always have.

JET believes that if one loves someone and something, then this love should be displayed. Thus, to love our Batik/Tenun/Songket/Tapis and other textile is to wear these textiles, particularly during these solemn and graceful events of Eid Mubarak & Halal Bilhalal.
