Long live Marc Jacobs!

Happy birthday Marc Jacobs! In a way to celebrate his 52nd birthday, the American designer released a personal photo of him with his beloved companions in his instagram account (@themarcjacobs,) a few hours ago. I just love seeing his cool and sporty look.

I have to admit that I am a big, and I mean BIG, fan of Jacobs’s creations, through his signature Marc Jacobs enigmatic line, Marc by Marc Jacobs secondary line and his exclusive designs for Louis Vuitton (1997-2013).

As the first American creative director for Louis Vuitton’s womens collection, he brought not only a fresh breath of air but also he provided total reinvigoration of the centuries old French Maison.

A number of fashion editors, bloggers and Jacobs followers would vividly remember how Jacobs brilliantly established one-of-a-kind collaboration with, among others, Takashi Murakami –creating the sought after cherry blossom collection-  and the tres limited first editions of Neverfull for LA Museum of Contemporary Art/MOCA-, Stephen Sprouse –the now most sought after LV collectibles graffiti monogram collection-, Yayoi Kusama –the polka dots monogram collection-.

Mr Jacobs is also well known to be a faithful and good friend to his close knitted circle. One of whom is the beautiful and talented Sofia Coppola (SC) who serves both as a confidante and muse to him. The classy SC Bag in Louis Vuitton is a hybrid of the very essence of Jacobs and Coppola successful collaboration.

Indonesian Ikat was applied as his source of inspiration in  designing the Ikat bags and accessories collection in 2012. Ikat would also be found in the inline textile of the bags.

Part of the current LV success owes to Jacobs because he and his excellent team has provided nothing but the very best since first joining the French fashion house until last year. When Jacobs left, LV reached an annual sales of nearly EUR7 billion, or $9.5 billion, and more than half of LVMH’s operating profit.

Through his own Marc Jacobs line, numerous creative items were crafted. I remember strolling through his Marc by Marc Jacobs in Bleecker St NY and found lots of those special creations from his array of Miley, Naomi, and other movie moguls, divas and top models t’shirts strutting the words “Protect the skin you’re in” which each sale will proceed to NYU Skin Cancer Institute to a more affordable collection of Jacobs quilted bags in every colour that we desire.

From what I have closely observed and read for decades, I have come to conclusion that in order to be an excellent designer, one needs to know not only to design glamorous frocks but also to sell them glamorously well too. I do believe that Jacobs has all these qualities. He understands completely the close link of fashion, art, culture and business. These elements would have to be taken into account by any established and aspiring designer, including Indonesian designers.

Although his followers can no longer witness his genius collection in Vuitton since last year, Jacobs –being a true designer- has and will always fascinate and attract our minds with his fashionable ideas.

Happy birthday, Marc!(+marcjacobs) Keep on fascinating our world with your extraordinary taste and exquisite creations!
